Description
Keizer Karel krijgt van een engel de opdracht om uit stelen te gaan. Dit gebod verbaast Karel: 'Wat node soude mij sijn te stelen, ik ben so rike (...)'. Karel aarzelt want met dieven loopt het niet goed af: 'Men doetse hangen en thooft of slaen'. Toch gehoorzaamt hij want de opdracht komt tenslotte van God. Karel pakt zijn zwaard en rijdt op zijn paard bij nacht het woud in. Daar komt hij een zwarte ridder tegen ... en zo beginnen de avonturen in deze aloude Karel-geschiedenis; de auteur ervan is onbekend en deze ridderroman verscheen voor het eerst in druk rond 1250. Deze uitgave is een zg. diplomatische tekstuitgave, dwz. de oorspronkelijke Middelnederlandse tekst is aangehouden maar is wel voorzien van versnummers en interpunktie.
